Channel 5 (KSTP)
Offices: Detroit, Michigan
KSTP-TV Channel 5, the upper Midwest's first
commercial television station, is owned
by the broadcasting company Hubbard Broadcasting.
Channel 5 signed on the air April 27, 1948
and today remains the only locally owned
locally operated broadcasting company in
the Twin Cities. Eyewitness News is the
station's hallmark, presenting local news,
weather, and sports coverage daily for Channel
5 (ABC network affiliate). |
Channel 5 (WCVB)
Offices: Boston, Massachusetts
The station goes on the air as WHDH-TV,
a CBS affiliate, owned by The Boston Herald-Traveler
Corporation in 1957. A group of local investors
and community leaders, Boston Broadcasters,
takes over Channel 5 as WCVB-TV; the station
switches network affiliation to ABC and
begins operations on March 19. They have
been awarded for best day-to-day coverage
throughout the year in the Massachusetts-Rhode
Island area. |
Channel 5 Eyewitness News (WOI)
Offices: West Des Moines, Iowa
On February 21, 1950 WOI-TV signed on the
air to become the first television station
in central Iowa. Since WOI was the only
station during the early years, programming
was taken from all the national networks
of the time (ABC, CBS, NBC, and the now
defunct Dumont Network). Over the next four
decades WOI-TV would become a sole affiliate
of ABC. Today, WOI-TV along with the ABC
Television Network broadcast a variety of
news, information, sports and entertainment
programming. |

Channel 7 (WXYZ)
Offices: Detroit, Michigan
WXYZ, Channel 7 began broadcasting on Saturday
October 9th, 1948 as an ABC affiliate. All
ABC-owned stations, such as Detroit, began
to see local news as the future in local
programming. Consequently, they "beefed
up" their news operations making sense economically.
Also, ABC began developing more of its own
programming. And they started taking more
risks. Channel 7's coverage of the 12th
street riots in 1967 would make it the most
watched newscast in Detroit. |
Channel 8 (KLAS)
Offices: Las Vegas, Nevada
KLAS, Channel 8, is the fastest growing
metropolitan area of the country. Las Vegas
is the 47th largest market in the country.
The KLAS website was one of the first local
news websites in the country. KLAS-TV is
a partner in Las Vegas One, an all-news
channel, along with The Las Vegas Sun and
Cox Cable. It is the CBS affiliate for the
Las Vegas area and is owned by Landmark
Communications. |

KGUL-TV signed on the air on March 23, 1953.
In 1959 it changed its call letters from
